Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Visit to the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC)
In September 2019, Wei Xiaoyu, Senior Program Officer for Malaria at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, along with Sun Bo and Lin Huali, Chairman of Landcent (China) Industrial Development Co., Ltd., visited the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC). The delegation was hosted by Zhao Xiaolong, Assistant Director of SIOC and Director of the Scientific Research Management Department, along with key researchers including Jiang Biao from the Key Laboratory of Organic Synthetic Chemistry of Natural Products, Yao Jianhua from the Key Laboratory of Energy Regulating Materials, and Associate Researcher Xing Ping.
The Foundation began its visit with a tour of the SIOC exhibition hall, where they expressed sincere appreciation for the significant contributions made by the institute. During the symposium, Wei Xiaoyu and Sun Bo engaged in discussions about SIOC’s development history and strategic focus areas. They thoroughly addressed the details of the co-development project for anti-malarial drugs, which is rooted in computer-aided drug design and the synthesis of compounds from ancient natural compound libraries within the Traditional Chinese Medicine database. The Foundation highlighted its confidence in the collaboration, citing SIOC’s strong track record and success stories.
Additionally, SIOC presented information on the Foundation’s initiatives related to anti-tuberculosis, antiHIV/AIDS, and waterless bio-toilets. The Foundation demonstrated keen interest in these areas, highlighting the importance of comprehensive cooperation for advancing global health.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, established in January 2000 by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his then-wife Melinda, is dedicated to promoting equality in health and education worldwide. This visit to SIOC represents a crucial step forward in fostering collaboration among leading research institutions, government entities, and non-profit organizations in the fight against diseases of poverty.
As both parties look to deepen their partnership, this milestone sets the stage for impactful advancements in the development of anti-malarial therapies and other vital health initiatives, reinforcing the commitment to improving health outcomes for communities around the globe.
